Vardar - PPD Zagreb

From the very beginning of the League duels between Vardar and PPD Zagreb were always full of amazing plays, interesting moments and uncertainty with these two rivals often meeting in trophy-deciding matches. This time PPD Zagreb are traveling to Skopje to meet Vardar weakened without 7 players giving Vardar complete favorite role.

Both two teams are expected to reach League’s F4 but they are also both eager to reach top two positions which would lead them directly to semis. In their first duel of the season Zagreb were at home better with 30:25. At the moment Croatian champions are two points ahead of Macedonian champions but with Zagreb having played one match less than Macedonians.

PPD Zagreb hopes of continuing the winning series in SEHA Gazprom League after three wins in a row, which would be a good prelude for another derby versus  Veszprem in less than 5 days. For duel with Vardar, PPD Zagreb’ coach, Veselin Vujović can not count on injured Stipe Mandalinić, Luka Stepančić, Luka Šebetić, Leon Šušnja, Josip Šandrk, Josip Valčić and Lovro Mihić. Youngster left back Jakob Vrdoljak (19) will join the first team along Velko Markoski who will have his debut coming from Rabotnički Skopje last week.

Vardar will play without Igor Karačić who has a knee injury, so the roster will be the same as in the last game in EHF Champions League versus KIF Kolding.  For Vardar this will be a good test before the next match in Prešov against Tatran, before which they will travel to Novi Sad to meet Vojvodina. Macedonians champions have managed to catch a point in Veszprem but also have an unexpected loss from Brest. To achieve their goal they need to win four games in seven days.

Raul Gonzalez, Vardar’s coach:

This is a very important game for us because we are playing against a direct rival for a place on F4. We have to play our best we can to win this match to climb to second place on the table. Of course it will be difficult, because PPD Zagreb has a lot of good young players but also experienced players who have played solid against Wisla Plock. They play aggressive defense that we need to attack and not allow them to use their counterattacks. We need to repeat solid defensive performance from the match against Kolding, especially from first half.

Filip Lazarov, Vardar’s player:

Against PPD Zagreb we have to try to repeat our good game that we had last weekend against Kolding in EHF Champions League. Zagreb is a very quality team, which is led by our former coach Veselin Vujović and also in their roster they have former Vardar’ players, Dobrivoje Marković and Velko Markoski. I expect an equal and exciting match and I would like to invite all handball fans to enjoy it.

Veselin Vujović, PPD Zagreb’ coach:

If we are talking hypothetically, then Vardar is an absolute favorite. We are missing a number of standard players and even in case some of them would be able to play I do not believe it would change something against Macedonian champions, and I decided not to risk with them. As you can see, Vardar is a favorite, but also was Wisla and some other teams so far and on all matches we have shown that we can and we know how to fight and that is what we will do in Skopje. We will take some younger players with us and depending on the situation some will give them some playing time in that game. On this mini tour through Macedonia victory against Maks is something I believe we have to reach and we’ll also try to do the same against Vardar.

Zlatko Horvat , PPD Zagreb’s player:

I am looking forward to this match and I hope we’ll play on the same level as we did in Plock. Vardar are favorites but our chances will keep on growing as lons as we manage to stay close. I would be satisfied with a good defensive performance along with well approach. Their strongest side in my opinion is good defense with Arpad Šterbik and fast transition in which they score easy goals and intend to break opponent’s tactics and focus.
