Vardar - Start of the rebuild following the glory days

Vardar

After it was confirmed which players will leave the SEHA – Gazprom League champions, it seemed like it would be almost impossible to bring in the necessary replacements. But, to some extent Vardar have done it, and are entering the season as the favourites for the title in the SEHA – Gazprom League. Repeating the successes from last two seasons in the EHF Champions League may be more difficult, but Vardar players will definitely be motivated to prove everyone wrong in Europe. The four-time SEHA champions have enjoyed the best ever campaign in the SEHA – Gazprom League, winning 17 matches in the regular season, in addition to two big wins at the Final 4, which brought them the title in front of their fans in SC Jane Sandanski.

Luka Cindric, Arpad Sterbik, Ilija Abutovic, Strahinja Milic, Mijajlo Marsenic, Jorge Maqueda and Joan Canelllas all left the club in the summer, spreading all across Europe. Every one of them played very important roles in winning titles over the past few years. The players that were brought in are: Stas Skube, Dimitrii Kiselev, Dejan Milosavljev and Sergei Gorbok, who returned to Vardar. Of course, Vardar have a new coach too, as Roberto Garcia Parrondo replaced Raul Gonzalez.

Even though the term 'new era' is on everyone's lips ahead of the season, it needs to be said that many players are still with the team. Of course, some changes did happen, but players like Stoilov, Karacic, Dibirov, Cupic, Shishkarev, Borozan and others are still in Skopje. This season's squad looks like a solid mix of youth and experience, especially knowing that some young players will definitely need to step up more.

Vardar definitely have the pieces to fight for trophies in various competitions. They remain the favourites in Macedonia and the SEHA – Gazprom League, whilst they will fight the deadly Group A in the EHF Champions League. A lot of hard work is ahead of them in the upcoming season, and everyone in Skopje knows that. The four-time SEHA champions will be looking to lift their third trophy in a row, knowing that it is going to be harder this time around. The club's history has been filled with obstacles, but they managed to overcome them. No doubt that they are in a similar situation once again; the rebuild phase has started for Vardar!
