Celje with a thriller victory in Slovenian SEHA derby in Velenje

Celje po dramatični končnici z zmago v slovenskem SEHA derbiju v Velenju

Gorenje - Celje

Celje Pivovarna Lasko has managed to beat Gorenje Velenje with 27:26 (16:13) in the first ever Slovenian SEHA Gazprom derby. As expected, it was an amazingly narrow match which has surely pleased all fans in ‘Rdeca dvorana’ in Velenje. The only thing home fans did not like was the result in a match in which Gorenje was looking to get back on winning tracks after a loss in CL qualifications in Prešov last week.

Reigning Slovenian champions were up through whole first half even reaching +4 on wings of great Blaz Janc. However, hosts have managed to cut the lead and score for 20:20 with a little more than 15 minutes left to play. They have even managed to take the lead at 24:23 but in the end, in a battle of strong defenses Celje’s captain Luka Zvizej was a game-winning factor for his team.

Serbian powerhouse Alem Toskic netted 7 for Gorenje and Blaz Janc scored 6 for hosts.

Branko Tamse, Celje Pivovarna Laško’ coach:

I expected a good match from Gorenje. After the tournament in Prešov, they were a bit wounded and that can be very dangerous. Our team is not nearly as prepared as I would like it to be. We’ve made a lot of mistakes. There were some good actions on both sides. When you win you forget about many bad things but I always tell my guys we should focus on things we were not doing right and fix that. I would like to congratulate to all players because it was not an easy match to play at all. I wish all the best to Velenje.

Luka Zvizej, Celje Pivovarna Lasko’ player:

I can agree with my coach, we knew where we are coming, we knew what kind of team Gorenje Velenje is, how they play. That was the first derby of Slovenian clubs in SEHA League. I think neither team is on the right level yet. Our main goal was to beat Velenje today and we did that. There is not much time to analyze as we’re going to Prešov in a few days and we have to focus on reaching another victory in Slovakia.

Marko Sibila, Gorenje Velenje’ coach:

Sadly, at the end we’ve lacked something to at least catch a point, we’ve made too many technical mistakes. We’ve simply missed too many clear opportunities allowing them to score easy goals especially in the first half. In that period they have managed to enlarge the gap and it was not easy to play like that knowing we have to catch them. This is however just the beginning of the season and I’m sure we’ll rise and that it will be visible in all competitions we’re in.

Alem Toskić, Gorenje Velenje’ player:

I would like to congratulate Celje for the win. We can say they were better in first 30 minutes and we were better in second half. However, in the end, we were not lucky enough, missed some important shots and allowed them to take full bags to Celje. We still have a lot to work on and hope for better results in the future.
